From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Randolph.' The Lond. Directory owes many entries to this once famous name. Randle was the favourite nick, form, and for centuries held its own as a font-name in Cheshire on account of the popularity of Randle, Earl of Chester, the Crusader. On the same page of the Index to Earwaker's East Cheshire I find Rander Borowes, Randle Blackshaw, and Randle Blundeville. The directory forms are Randle, Randall, and Randell. Rand was another abbreviation, and to it we owe Rand, Rands, and Ranson. With the diminutive kin added we get Rankin, Ranken, and Ranking. Ralph was, however, the most generally favoured corruption of Randolph. Primary stages will be found below:
Robert fil. Ranulf, Lincolnshire, 1273. Hundred Rolls.

In a paper on "The parentage of Thomas Randolph, earl of Moray, by Prof. D. W. Hunter Marshall (Scottish notes and queries, 3. ser. VIII, p. 2-5) the author suggests that the mother of this Thomas was the legitimate uterine sister of Robert I. This uterine sister, he thinks was the issue of a previous marriage of the countess Marjorie of which there appears to be some evidence. His father was the Thomas "Randolf" who was chamberlain of Scotland for some years during the reign of Alexander III. The old theory that the mother was Isabel, the full sister of Robert has been found to be inaccurate. Johan fitz Randolfe de Fodiche del counte de Fyfe rendered homage, 1296, and Johan fiz Randolfe del counte de Rokesburk the same (Bain, II, p. 208).
