This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor, 'the son of Randolph,' from the nickname, Rand, and patronymic Randson. This became Ranson, and then Ransom or Ransome; compare Hansom for Hanson (which see), or Sansom for Sanson (v. Sampson), or Milsom (which see) for Milson. The Ransous and Ransoms run side by side in Norfolk and Suffolk. For further particulars, v. Rand. Mr. Lower says, 'I should judge this name was originally Ransham, though I find no place so called'. Mr. Ferguson finds the etymon in the Old Norse ransamr, praedabundus, piratical. 'What curious changes,' says he, 'the whirligig of time brings round! We take our money to the descendant of the old sea-robber to take care of for us— Ransom & Co., bankers, Pall Mall. Another Ransome has turned his sword into a ploughsnare, and become famed as a maker of agricultural implements at Ipswich'. All this is purely imaginary.
