Ranson Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor, 'the son of Randolph,' from the nickname, Rand, and patronymic Randson. This became Ranson, and then Ransom or Ransome; compare Hansom for Hanson (which see), or Sansom for Sanson (v. Sampson), or Milsom (which see) for Milson. The Ransous and Ransoms run side by side in Norfolk and Suffolk. For further particulars, v. Rand. Mr. Lower says, 'I should judge this name was originally Ransham, though I find no place so called'. Mr. Ferguson finds the etymon in the Old Norse ransamr, praedabundus, piratical. 'What curious changes,' says he, 'the whirligig of time brings round! We take our money to the descendant of the old sea-robber to take care of for us— Ransom & Co., bankers, Pall Mall. Another Ransome has turned his sword into a ploughsnare, and become famed as a maker of agricultural implements at Ipswich'. All this is purely imaginary.

1601. Baptised — Margaret, d. Anthony Rannson, or Rannsom: St. James, Clerkenwell.

1788. Married — John Ransom and Jane Jones: St. George, Hanover Square.

1796. — Robert Ranson and Mary Ann Stanton: ibid.

Dictionary of American Family Names (1956) by Elsdon Coles Smith

From analogous corruptions, I should say, that this name was originally Ransham, though I find no place so called. Mr. Ferguson, with his accustomed facility, finds the etymon in the O.-Norse ransamr, praedabundus, piratical. "What curious changes," says he, "the whirligig of time brings round. We take our money to the descendant of the old sea-robber to take care of for us-Ransom & Co., bankers, Pall Mall. Another Ransome has turned his sword into a ploughshare, and become famed as a maker of agricultural implements at Ipswich."
