I.e., Red-cliff, has been a common name in the north of the island from an early period. It is a place-name in Lancashire, where this family was at one time of some importance, Thomas Radclyf was Abbot of Rushen. On an old oak board, which, accord­ing to Sacheverell, once separated the chancel of Kirk Arbory from the rest of the church, are the following words: '. . . Tyll Hys Tym God Hays Hym Gefyn Sich Grace He Laboreth Besaly Ho . . . Blovd the Best Cvyn of the Chylde fvn in The Egle Nest Thomas Radclyf Abbot.' Henry Radcliffe, also Abbot of Rushen, was deputy- governor in 1497.
