Rathjen Surname Meaning
User-submitted Reference
The name Rathjen and its many variants, may derive from "Rodende", that is, the one who turns woodland into arable land; or it may come from the old Saxon word "Rad" (these days most often 'Rat') meaning "Council". The suffix 'jen' and its variants, such as 'ke', or 'gen' refer to the diminutive. Or a patronymic form to 'Rathje', a surname built by the suffix „je', a lower German and Frisian nickname form of a first name „Radloff'. 'Rodende' makes sense only if we accept the legend that these people arose in the days when the Great European Forest was giving way to the present cultivated ground. The oldest information concerning the appearance of the name Ratjen in the Aukrug neighbourhood of the Duchy of Holstein is contained in an official Rendsburg invoice given by the National Archives in Copenhagen to the State Archives at Schleswig, and by a record of tithes of the Nortorf parish of 1539, filed in the archives of the Itzehoe monastery. The latter does not name the villages of Homfeld and Gnutz, which apparently paid no tithes to the pastor. The fact that these files are located at the monastery is itself significant of formerly forested areas becoming arable; or, perhaps (given the topography of the Jutland peninsula) of converting light sandy, marshy and waste land into productive farmed land.Source: Reimer, Georg et al., 1936: Die Familie Ratjen/Rathjen aus dem Aukrug (Ksp, Innien), auch aus Brammer, Kellinghusen, Mühlenbarbek. 133 pages.
