Of local origin from Ratter in the parish of Dunnet, Caithness. Alexander de Ratir who had the perpetual vicarage of Westra, 1443 (Pap. Lett., IX, p. 398), appears as Sir Alexander of Ratir, perpetual chaplain of Saint Andrew the Apostle of Golspi in 1448 (OPS., II, p. 650). Richard Ratter, a Scot born at Hollond was granted letters of denization in England in 1480 (Bain, IV, 1465). Master Malcolm Rattar was chaplain of the choir of the cathedral church of Dornoch in 1512 (OPS., II, p. 623), and another Master Malcolm Rotter natural son of Sir Andrew Rotai, vicar of Halkirk, was legitimated in 1538 (ibid., II, p. 757). John Rattir was mair of Sutherland in 1520 (ibid., p. 665). Alexander Rater in Dornoch who was juror on an inquest made at Inverness in 1542 may be the Alexander Rattar or Ratter, parish clerk of Golspie in 1545 and parish clerk of Kalmaly in the following year (ibid., p. 631,648, 676). Thomas Ratter who was juror on an inquest made at Dornoch in 1603 may be the Thomas Ratter who held a croft near Dornoch in 1633 (ibid., p. 642,644). Donald Ratter is recorded in Greenland in 1662 (Caithness).
