It is probably synonymous with the O.-French claqueur, a leper or lazar, so called because he collected alms by means of a claquette. clack dish, or "rattle-trap," which answered the two-fold purpose of calling the attention of the charitable, and at the same time of warning them against a too near approach to the unfortunate leper.
