Rattner Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

(English) One who caught rats.

Dictionary of American Family Names (1956) by Elsdon Coles Smith

User-submitted Reference

There are two possible origins for the surname Rattner. It might come from the Yiddish or German word Rad that can be translated as spinning wheel, and thus the meaning of the word would be weaver. The second one would have as origin the word Rat, in German, meaning advise, and Rattner could be translated as adviser or counselor. As my family lived in the nineteenth century near the Austro-Hungarian city of Lemberg (currently the Ukrainian city of Lviv), the higher probability is that the surname has German or Yiddish language origins. Only in 1848 all people in that province were required to have surnames - in the Austrian and Hungarian provinces, the law established this obligation from 1845 on. Before that, Jews normally used the name of their male ascendants with the Hebrew word "ben" (son of) before each ascendant.

This is as far as my research on my family name has gone. If anyone has more information on it, please correct or complement it.
