The first of the name on record is Alan de Ratheriff, who lived in the reigns of William the Lion and Alexander III. The family still reside at Craighall, in the parish of Rattray': Patronymica Britannica.

Of territorial origin from the barony of Rattray in Perthshire. In 1253 Sir Thomas de Rettre had a dispute with the abbot of Arbroath regarding the bounds of their properties (Warden, IV, p. 28). Adam de Rethereth witnessed a charter by Cristina de Valoniis, c. 1256 (Panmure, II, 141). Sir Adam de Rotrefe swore fealty to Edward I at St. Andrews in 1291 (Bain, II, 508), and jn 1296 Eustace de Rettref was one of the Scots prisoners taken at Dunbar Castle and sent to Wisbeach Castle (ibid., p. 178). Ade de Retref was charter witness at Lochmaben, 1294 (HP., II, p. 130). John de Rettre was collector of contributions in the sheriffdom of Perth 'super Ileff' (Isla) in 1373 (ER., II, p. 423), William Rettre or de Rettre appears as burgess and guild brother of Aberdeen in 1436 and 1438, and David Retre was admitted a burgess there in 1500 (NSCM., I, p. 5, 40; SCM., V, p. 44). Gilbert de Retra leased Tulifergus, a. 1442 (Cupar Angus, I, p. 119), Silvester Rettray, a follower of the earl of Cassilis, was respited for murder in 1526 (RSS., I, 3386), and Johnne Ratteray had a feu of the lands of Craigmakeren in 1586 (Scon, 234). Catharine Rotray made a gift to the church of Aberdeen, 1549 (REA., II, p. 183). Raittre 1547, Ratre 1550, Ratry 1426, Retrey 1529, Rettra 1490, Retthray 1487 Ruttera 1651.
