From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of the Rylands.' There are two places that have originated surnames bearing this title. Mr. J. Paul Rylands, F.S.A., says the name 'Ryelands is derived from the Anglo-Saxon rye or rhee, a water-course or stream, and lands, the lands adjoining or above the stream.' (1) Rylands, a spot situated in the township of Westhoughton, and parish of Deane, Lancashire.

Robert del Ruylondes, of West Halghton, 1 Edward III: 'The Rylands of the Rylands, within Westhoughton, Lancashire' by J. Paul Rylands F.S.a.

William de Rylondes, of Halghton, 6 Edward III: ibid.

Nicholas del Rylondes, 1436: ibid.

(a) Rylands, a spot within the parish of Wilmslow, Cheshire.

'The hamlets of Styhale, Curblchelegh, and Northcliffe, Rylondis, Stanilondis, and Harethorn': Earwaker's East Cheshire.

Thomas de Ruylonds, of Wilmslow, c. 1300: ibid.

Roylance, although it has a chivalrous aspect, is purely imitative. If any doubt rested on this, it would be dispelled by the following entry concerning a fanner who was twice sued for tithe by his vicar:

Thomas Rylands, or Thomas Rylance, Warmincham, Cheshire, 1680: Exchequer Depositions.

From Rylance to Roylance was as easy as it was an inevitable change. With Rylance compare Sandilance for Sandilands.
