From Rayne in the parish of the same name in Aberdeenshire. Robert de Ran witnessed a charter by Mathew Kynninmond, bishop of Aberdeen, c. 1180 (REA., I, p. 11; RAA., I, p. 136). Adam de Rane and Roginald de Ran were burgesses of Aberdeen in 1317 (SCM., V, p. 10), and Rertillot de Rane was on an assize in same place in 1333 (REA., I, p. 53).
