A somewhat rare name in Scotland, derived from Redmain in West Cumberland near Cockermouth. The family of Redman or Redmayne was a prominent one in Westmoreland and Cumberland for five centuries, and branches of the family became prominent in Yorkshire. Sir Mathew de Redemaan or Redeman was custodian of the Castle of Dounfres under Edward I in 1304 (Bain, IV. p. 470,471), and a later Matthew de Redmane had a protection for two years for going on the king of England's service beyond seas in 1370 (ibid., IV, 170).
