Reason Surname Definition:
The origin of this surname is unknown.
It may be patronymic, from 'the son of Raymond or local from 'of Rasen'. Several instances below suggest that the suffix is not -son, but the diminutive -on or -in, as in Marion, Robin, &c. Possibly it is the diminutive of the once popular Rose (which see), of which the German diminutive was Roschen, the French Rosine, and the later English Rosanne.

Reason Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
All is conjecture, but I feel nearly positive that -son is not the terminative. The entries in the Hundred Rolls (A.) would be John fil. Ray, not John Raysun, as below. But v. Rayson, which will explain much.
Henry Reson, Oxfordshire, 1273. Hundred Rolls.
Richard Resen, Oxfordshire, ibid.
Geoffrey Resun, Suffolk, ibid.
Betricia Raysun, Cambridgeshire, ibid.
John Raysun, Cambridgeshire, ibid.
Albray Rayson, 1379: Poll Tax of Yorkshire.
Willelmus Reyson, 1379: ibid.
1792. Married — John Lennon and Susanna Reason: St. George, Hanover Square.
1 Rea’s Son: v. Rea.
2 a variant of Rayson and Rasen, q.v.
Has probably no relation to that which distinguishes the man from the brute. It is perhaps a corruption of Reeve's-son-analogous to Stewardson, Cookson, &c.
From the Dutch, Riessen; a personal name.
