From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
This surname is derived from a nickname. 'with the red head'; compare Whitehead, Silverlock, Brownbeard, &c. It is quite possible the name is local, from some red-coloured headland of rock or soil. There are such spots so called in Forfarshire and Orkney. But one thing is certain, Yorkshire is the source of the family of Redheads that have drifted westwards into the Furness district of North Lancashire. No prefix is found, pointing distinctly to a nickname origin.

Fargus Redhede, Scottish merchant, complained in 1358 that goods of great value were carried from the wreck of his ship at Cotum in Clyveland (Bain, IV, 26). Richard Reidheid who appears in Aberdeen in 1497 is probably the Rich Redhed who contributed to the church repairs of the same town in 1508 (CRA., I, p. 425), and David Reidheid was admitted burgess there in 1542 (NSCM., I, p. 58). George Reidheid was servitor to Alexander Lillie in Old Aberdeen, 1610, and James Reidheid is recorded in Asleid, 1629 (RSCA., II, p. 163,313). Readhead 1660.
