Of local origin from the lands, now village, of Redpath in the parish of Earlston, Berwickshire. The local pronunciation of the name is Rippath, with which compare the spellings of 1545 and 1562 below. William de Redepathe of Berwickshire rendered homage in 1296 (Bain, II, p. 204). Alexander de Redpeth received moiety of the lands of Derington, c. 1329-34. Thomas de Redpethe and Mariota, his spouse, had grant of lands in the vill and territory of Preston in the barony of Bonkylle from Thomas Stewart, earl of Angus, confirmed by Robert I 1376 (RMS., I, 667). Walter Redpeth held a land in Edinburgh, 1486 (RMS., II, 1655), William Rypat appears as a friar preacher at St. Andrews, 1545 (Laing, 494), and James Reydpeth of the convent of Dunfermline is recorded in 1555 (ibid., 633). Cristall Redpecht (for Redpetht), witness in Fife, 1548 (Gaw, 40). Triamor Reidpeth was feufarmer of Crumrig in 1566 (ER., XIX, p. 333), Thomas Reidpeth de eodem was retoured heir in lands of Middel Winscheill, etc., in 1602 (Retours, Berwick, 28), and David Redpeth was skipper in Borrowstounes in 1655 (Inquis., 4015). Several Redpaths were ministers of local parishes, and George Ridpath, minister of Stitchill, published his Border history of England and Scotland in 1776. The surname early made its way north, and Cristal Ridpetht was witness in Kirkwall in 1557, and James Reidpetht was juror on assize there in the following year (OSR., I, p. 264).
