RENNARIUS: Aluuinus Rennere who was witness to gift of church of Guuen (Govan) to the church of Glasgow, c. 1134, is doubtless Alfwinus Rennere who witnessed the grant of the church of Lohworuora (now Boithwick) to Herbert, bishop of Glasgow, c. 1150 (REG., p. 11, 13). Elwynus Renner, most probably the same person, and Ede, his wife, gifted the church of Neutun in Fife to the Abbey of Dunfermline in the reign of Malcolm IV (RD p. 25, 55). In the reign of William the Lion Gillexus Rennerius witnessed the gift of "Gillandreas mac suthen et eius liberos" to the same abbey (ibid., p. 36). "Henrico Rennario meo" appears as witness in several charters by Gilbert, earl of Stratheam in 1199 and following years (LIM., p. xxvi, 5, 8, 12; Inchaffray, p. 4, 8, 31, etc.). In a note on the name the late Prof. Mackinnon says, "Rennarius is manifestly a Latinised form of the Gaelic rannaire, literally 'the divider.' in old Gaelic Saga, the Fled Bricrend for example, the rennairi carved or distributed (or both) the portions of food to individual guests. . The correct analysis of the word is rannaim 'I divide' (now roinn) and -aire, cognate with Latin -anus, a suffix indicating personal agent. The word is usually translated 'spencer,' 'butler'" (Inchaffray, p. lii).
