This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Rembrandt'; compare the name of the artist Rembrandt. This was really his baptismal name: probably he was Rembrandt Hermanszoon (Hermanson), or Rembrandt van Rhyn of Leyden. He was buried as 'Rembrant van Rign,' Oct 8, 1669 (v. Chambers' Encyclop.). I suspect Remnant (an imitative corruption) is an immigrant from the Low Countries. Remblant is an intermediate stage.
