This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. Probably mere changes rung upon Randle or Randal, the nick, of Randolph (v. Randall). Perhaps, however, it would be more natural to refer them to Rennell (which see), a popular form of Reynold. Then the 'd' would be merely intrusive, as is common after.

From Randall, diminutive of Randolph, or (2) from diminutive of Reynold, i.e. Reginald. Said to be the earliest native Orcadian surname. The earliest mention of it is in 1325-6, when it is recorded that Rechinald (Reginald) de Rayndal's betrothed had been carried to Norway (Diplomatarium Norvegicum, VII, p. 125). John Randell or Rendell appears lawman of Orkney in 1438 and 1446 (REO., p. 10, 51), and James Rendall is recorded in Kirkwall in 1516 (SCM., V, p. 395). Rendaill of that Ilk is mentioned in 1565 (REO., p. 282). The Orkney surname is of local origin from the township of Rendall in the parish of Rendall.
