According to family tradition, during the Crusades, some of the men from the Rens de Chateau area became members of the Knights Templar. At least one moved to the sea where he chased "Viking" ships to keep them from the mainland. In the process, he owned or was captain of a ship.
When the French King went after the Knights Templar (because they served as bankers and he owed them money) that Rens Templar escaped with his ship and disappeared up the river into Latvia. There he used the money he had available to establish Renge Manor in the south of Latvia.
Two of his offspring went to St. Petersburg and served the Russian navy with their naval skills, especially the making and using of navigation equipment.
During the reign of Catherine the Great they were thrown out of Russia and moved to the "big port" in the north of Germany where the family owned many ships. By then -storff had been added.
