From the Gaelic adjective riabhach, brindled, greyish. A common descriptive surname. John Reoch was burgess of Inverness, 1452 (Invernessiana, p. 153). Part of the lands of Parcy or Parcyis were leased to Alan Reoch or Roeoch in 1463—73 (Cupar-Angus, I, p. 136,201). Robert Reauch and Finlay Reauch were tenants on lands of the bishopric of Aberdeen, 1511 (REA., I, p. 369,377), and Gilbert Reoch was the king's officer and messenger-of-arms in Irvine, 1514 (Irvine, I, p. 33) John Reaucht admitted burgess of Aberdeen in 1530 (NSCM., I, p. 51) may be John Reaucht amerced there in 1539 for "ye nonganging in corpus criste processioun" (Mill, Plays, p. 127). Donald Reach appears as witness in Banff, 1544 (RMS., III, 3062), and Jacobus Reacht in Murthlac, 1550 (Illus., II, p. 262). Complaint was made against John McAwreoch in Litill Urchun and Donald McAwreoch in Caddell, 1578 (RPC., III, p. 51), and John Rioche is recorded in Dunfermline, 1585 (Dunfermline), and Kenneth Rioch in Knockdui, 1726 (HP., II, p. 384).
