From Reston in the parish of Coldingham, Berwickshire. Adam de Rystona was witness to a quitclaim of the land of Swinton by Patrick, first earl of Dunbar (Raine, 117), and Roger de Reston witnessed a deed by Waldeve, earl of Dunber, in 1166 (Coldingham, 178). Oliver de Rystone of the county of Berewyke rendered homage in 1296 (Bain, II, p. 206). The name is early found in Glasgow. John de Restoun was burgess of the city in 1417 (LCD., p. 239). Another John de Restone, who is mentioned as a cleric there in 1440, appears again in 1442 as plain John Restoune (REG., 344,345), and mention is also made of the tenement of magister John Restown there in 1478 (ibid., 420).
