Reuel Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
REUEL: An old forgotten personal name in England of uncertain origin, but "a common surname in present Yorkshire directories" (Bardsley). Rauelin, its diminutive, occurs in DB. (Bearle). Henry Reuel, whom Chalmers (Caledonia, I, p. 590) calls "a foreigner," obtained from William the Lion a grant of the lands of Cultrath in Fife (Balmerino, 2). He was one of those taken prisoner with the king at Alnwick, 1174 (Annals, p. 181), and married Margaret, a daughter of Orm, son of Hugh of Abernethy. He witnessed the confirmation charter by King William of the church of Aberrotheuen to the Abbey of Inchaffray, c. 1199-1200 (Inchaffray, p. 4), and was also witness to several other charters by the same king (LSC., p. 36,211; RAA., I, 29) Dying without issue he transmitted his lands of Cultrath, Balmerinach, and Ballendard to his nephew Richard, who obtained confirmation of them from Alexander II, and in addition the lands of Esterardent (Balmerino, 3). Ricardus Reuel or Reuell witnessed confirmation by King William of the sale of a toft in Coldingham (Raine, 57), and also confirmation of a gift of lands in Buthirgasc to the monastery of Scone (Scon, p. 20) He also witnessed the gift of Mucraht to the church of Glasgow, c. 1200, and another charter of c. 1208-14 (REG., p. 78, 92). Richard also dying without issue was succeeded by his brother, Adam de Reuel or de Stawell, who, as Adam de Stawelle, gifted fifteen acres of the lands of Balmulinauch (Balmerino) to the church of St. Andrews (RPSA., p. 271-272). In 1225 Adam sold the lands of Cultrath, Ardint, and Balmerinach with its church to Ermengard, the queen dowager, for one thousand merks. Adam went into the king's court at Forfar, before Alexander II himself, and surrendered the whole to Ermengard, and the queen granted the estates thus acquired to the monastery of Balmerinach, which she founded (Balmerino, I, 4, 5, 6). He also witnessed several charters by King William (LSC., 40, 45; Laing, 3; Athole, p. 704; RAA., 69, etc.; RD., p. 32, 38).
