Reville Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
There was a Roger Rivel in Co. Kilkenny in 1305 and in 1544 Pyers Revell was one of the kern in Lord Power's muster for service in England. But the name does not appear in Irish records with any frequency until the seventeenth century when it begins to occur regularly in Co. Wexford. By 1659 it was sufficienty established and numerous enough there to be returned in the so called census of that date as a principal Irish name in the barony of Bargy. Two centuries later it was still definitely of Co. Wexford: Griffith's Valuation lists over 40 families in the county, but they had ceased then to be concentrated in the one barony. Though Reville can thus be regarded as a naturalized Irish surname, it is still far more common in England: Marshall in his bibliography of family history lists works on Revells in five different English counties and also in Wales. Three different derivations of the name are given by Reaney and Weekley: Latin rebellus, whence French revel and font-name Revel; a reveller; and French placename Rievaulx. As a surname in France it is Réville, cf. Albert Réville (1826-1900), the Protestant theological writer.
Apart from occasional references in mediaeval records, Reville does not appear regularly in Ireland until the seventeenth century. Since then it has been definitely a Co. Wexford name. SIF 130
