Nick 'the king,' Latinized into Rex. This is quite possible; compare Faber for Wright; v. King.

Adam Rex, Cambridgeshire, 1273. Hundred Rolls.

John Rex, Cambridgeshire, ibid.

(2) Bapt. 'the son of Richard,' from the nick. Rick (compare Dick and Hick), whence the genitive Ricks, (compare Williams for William) modified to Rix (compare Dix for Dicks), and lastly to Rex. Nine-tenths of our Rexes must be thus derived. For instances, v. Rix and Rixon. The change from Rix to Rex is modern, and, of course, imitative of the Latin.
