In the 13th century the name occurred in the form of Reyner, and occasionally of Rayner, in Essex, Norfolk, Hunts, Lincolnshire, and also Oxfordshire (H. R.). The Halstead district is their present home in Essex. John Rayner held 50 acres of land in Stanway in the middle of last century (M.). John Rayner was mayor of Colchester in 1678 (C.). Several of the Norfolk clerics bore this name in the 14th and 15th centuries; Walter Rayner was a member of the Common Council of Norwich in 1687: Richard Rayner lived in Hevingham in the same county in the reign of Elizabeth (Blomefield's "Norfolk").
