A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

From the parish of Rhynd in Perthshire. William de Rynd was a charter witness in Aberdeen, 1342 (REA., I, p. 72). Although Rynd or Rhynd is now a somewhat rare name in Angus it is of considerable antiquity in that county. Rinds or Rynds figure in feuds with Ogilvies, Guthries, and other neighbors there (Stodart, II,, p. 111-112). Murthacus (Murdoch) del Rynde had a gift from David II of four oxgates of land in the royal hunting forest of Plater and four oxgates of Casse in 1366 (RMS., I, 257), and as Muryoch of the Rynde was one of the assizors on the marches of Woodwrae, 1388 (Bamff, p. 22). Patrick of Rynd was alderman of Forfar in 1372. William Rinde, witness in Edinburgh, c. 1426 (Egidii, p. 49), Henry Rynde was canon of Caithness, 1435 (Pap. Lett., VIII, p. 555), and in 1447 James de Rynde held a tenement in Rrechin (RER., l, 110). James Rynde of Rroxmouth was witness in 1470 (Panmure, II, 245), and his seal attached to a document dated 1478 reads S' iacobi riende (Macdonald, 2275). Sir Laurence Rynd, cleric, was witness at Tuliboill, 1546 (Rollok, 5), and a payment was made to Patrik Rynde in Perth, 1614 (Mill, Plays, p. 267). William Rynd obtained the rectory and prebend of Arbuthnott in 1548 (SCM., IV, p. 50), and John Rinne or Rind is in record in Elgin, 1661 (Rec. Elgin, II, p. 369-370). There is a Rhind in Fife, and Hugh del Rynd, cleric of William de Lamberton, 1300 (RPSA., p. 120) may derive from it. Alexander Henry Rhind (1833—1863), Egyptian explorer, was founder of the Rhind Lectureship in Archaeology. The brothers Rhind of Edinburgh were distinguished sculptors. Rhynde 1663, Rind 1655, Rine 1661, Riyin 1645.
