Riall Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

Ó Raghaill Ryle is the usual spelling in Kerry, where the name is mainly found. SIF 132

A Guide to Irish Names (1964) by Edward MacLysaght

Other variants of these are Riall, Ryle and Rile. As all these are almost invariably found in Munster, it is difficult to accept Woulfe's statement that this name-Ó Raghaill in Irish-is an abbreviated form of Ó Raghaille, i.e. O'Reilly, because O'Reilly is a Breifny name (see Irish Families, pp. 255-6). If it must be equated with any other name O'Rahilly would appear more likely since it belongs to Co. Kerry as does Ryall: the census of 1911 records 21 families of the name in Co. Kerry. It occurs in one of its variant forms, always without the prefix O, in many records from the present time back to the seventeenth century-e.g. birth registrations, Griffith's Valuation, diocesan wills, Dublin University register etc.

and I have not met any instance outside Munster except a few in Leix and Offaly. In the sixteenth century the O is still retained and the name is more like O'Rahilly, for it occurs in the Fiants as O'Rahill and O'Raghill (in Counties Cork and Limerick). The inconsistency of spelling names at that period, due to the unfamiliarity of recording officials with the Irish language, may lead to some confusion: O'Reile and O'Reale for example may be meant for O'Reilly but in such cases the homeland of the person in question is often a help in identification.

According to de Burgh's Landowners of Ireland, 1878, the Rialls of Clonmel possessed extensive property in Co. Tipperary prior to the Land Acts. According to Weekley in England Ryall is an occassional derivative of Riulf (Anglo-Saxon Riewulf).

Judge Patrick Real (1847-1928) of Queensland, was born at Pallas, Co. Limerick.

*The derivation of Loughrey mentioned by Mr. T. O Raifeartaigh is not the common one (See More Irish Families 168n.).
