From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

From the parish and barony of Rerrick or Berwick in the Stewartry of Kirkcudbright. The place name is pronounced Riddick i.e. Red Wick, by the common folk (Trotter, Galloway gostip— Kirkcudbrightshire, p. 71). Nicholas de Reraik held a toft and croft in the vill of Treuquer (Troqueer), Kirkcudbrightshire, c. 1280 (Helm Cultram, p. 59). Gilbert de Rerik, archdeacon of Glasgow (REG.), sat in the Scottish Parliament in 1467. His seal is described by Macdonald (2274). George Rodyck was witness in Tungland, 1564 (Laing, 772), and William Redik of Dalbatye is mentioned in 1577. John Redik was retoured heir in the five merk lands of Barharrow in 1599 (Retours, Kirkcudbright, 42), and in 1619 Edward Maxwell was ordered to find caution not to molest James Redick and Hew Redick at the Steppis of Or (Urr) (RPC., XI, p. 589) Agnes Readick was married in Edinburgh, 1630 (Edinb. Marr.), and Barbara Reddik was heir portioner of Paul Reddik of Barscheine or Barschein in 1646 (Retours, Kirkcudbright, 239). John Reddick or Rodick of Dalbeattie is in record, 1678 and 1699 (ibid., 332; Inquis., 8168). George Riddick is in Littleknox, 1686, and Edward Riddick in Mains of Kelton, 1749 (Kirkcudbright). There were Reriks, Reddicks, Rediks, or Redocks of Barnhourie, Dalbeattie, Corbietoun, etc., and the name is still represented in the district.
