Ringrose Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
I have no satisfactory derivation to offer regarding this surname. It is clearly sprung from East Yorkshire.
Robert Ryngrose, 1544, York:: Corpus Christi Guild (Surtees Society).
1615. John Ringrose, Norfolk: Register of the University of Oxford.
1744. Married — John Thirlwall and Hannah Ringrose: St. George, Hanover Square.
The tradition in this family is that the name was originally Rose and that in 1560 Queen Elizabeth presented a ring to Richard Rose of Hampshire or Dorset as a reward for distinguished military service, as a result of which the surname became Ringrose. Weekley offers a less romantic derivation, viz. Ringroe, wroe from Middle-English wra meaning a nook or corner. Both he and Bardsley describe Ringrose as a Yorkshire name. Whatever its origin in England may be it is on record in Ireland since the seventeenth century and closely associated with cast Clare. The first Ringrose to settle there was Col. Richard who was well over 100 years old when he died in 1707: he is said to have been the grandson of the Elizabethan soldier. He is described as of Mynoe (near Scariff), Co. Clare, and there are quite a number of references to Ringroses in that area in wills, leases, rentals, etc. from the year 1699 onwards though it is rare there now.
That remarkable character Basil Ringrose (d. 1686), who was both buccaneer and author, was an Englishman. A young Irishman of the name, Comdt. Ringrose of the Irish army, has attained fame as an outstanding performer in international jumping contests.
(English) [the first element is doubtless Old English hring, a ring, circle, round; while the second apparently represents the pl. of Old English rǽw, a row (as of houses or hedges: cp. Dialectal English row, a hedge] This seems to be specifically a Yorkshire surname: it is found as Ryngrose in the 16th cent.
More than one derivation has been put forward for this name, which came to east Clare from Yorkshire in the seventeenth century. SIF 131
