From the old barony of Rires in Fife. Gospatricus de Rirais witnessed the gift of the church of Hadintona by Richard, bishop of St. Andrews before 1173 (RPSA., p. 135), and a. 1199 was witness to a charter by Malcolm, son of Earl Duncan, to the nuns of North Berwick (SHSM., IV, p. 309). Ralph de Ronays of Fife who rendered homage in 1296 (Bain, II, p. 209) appears as Rereys in RR. Nicholas Reres was prebendary of Renfreu in 1491 (REG., 460). Alexander Rireis in Strathtodla is mentioned in 1606 (RSCA., II, p. 91), Thomas Rires was minister of Lonmay in 1633 (SCM., III, p. 135), and in the same year a delatione was given in against Mr. William Rires, minister of the same parish (Alford, p. 28). John Rires in Ratray, 1634 (SCM., III, p. 135).
