The origin and meaning of the Ričnik surname is unclear, there are speculations that it may have developed from the Bosnian rječnik, which would make it 'speaker', 'narrator'. Another theory is that it developed out of rižnik, someone dealing with 'rice' (riž in Slovenian), but that doesn't seem as likely.
The variant Ricnik in Germany exists because of the absence of the letter č in the German alphabet and the inability to store it in computers in the 1960's, but they're the same family from Slovenia.
