This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Rouen,' the capital of Normandy; a mediaeval spelling. An old poet, speaking of Richard I, says: 'Thy bowels only Carceol keeps; Thy corse Font Everard; But Roan hath keeping of thy heart, O puissant Richard. (Lower's Patronymica Britannica.)

(2) Local, 'at the rowan,' from residence beside a rowan-tree; compare Roantree for Rowantree (v. Rowntree). So also we have Crabb and Crabtree, Plumb and Plumptre. Of (1) and (a) the second is probably the true derivation in most cases.
