From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

ROBERTON: Of territorial origin from the ancient manor of the same name, now the parish of Roberton, Lanarkshire. In the reign of Malcolm IV the manor belonged to Robert (the brother of Lambin who gave name to Lamington), and took its name from him. Robert of Robertstun witnessed a charter by Hugh, son of Robert, son of Waldeve de Bigar, granted at Lesmahago in 1228 (Kelso, 186). Steven de Roberton of the county of Lanark rendered homage in 1296 (Bain, II, p. 198), and in 1304-5 Master Stephen de Rodberdeston or Roberdestone was clerk of Sir James de Dalilegh (ibid., p. 423,455). Before 1329 the lands of Robertstoun in Lanarkshire were given by Robert I to John of Monfode (RMS., 1, App. II, 600). John of Robardston was witness to a charter by William de Conynghame in 1365 (RMS., I, 204), and in 1390 John de Robertun of Ernoksaunfoy resigned his lands of Auchinleck in the barony of Renfrew (RMS., I, 799). Stephen de Roberton obtained letters of safe conduct from Henry IV of England in 1408 (Rot. Scot., II, p. 187), John de Robertoun was presbyter in Glasgow in 1440 (LCD., p. 252), and in 1487 John of Robertone of that Ilk possessed the lands of Modervile (now Motherwell) (ADC., p. 30). Wishaw (Description of Lanark, p. 17) says Roberton of Earnock was reputed chief of the name in his day. The surname is sometimes confused with Robertson. An erroneous form, MacRoberton, occurs in the Register of the Privy Council in 1600. Robertown 1537.
