Belonging to Rochester (Kent), the Anglo-Saxon (7th cent.) Hrófes-ceaster, i.e. Hróf’s (Roman) Stronghold [the pers. name is apparently Old English hróf, m., (lit. roof), sky, heaven, in the genit. + Old English ceaster, a fortified place; Latin castr-um, a castle] This was Bede’s belief ('Hist. Eccl.’ II. iii.); but if Rochester, as has been claimed, was the Celtic-Roman Rotibis (as well. as Duro-brivis), Bede may have been wrong.
