This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Rochford.' Lower says,' The Irish family settled in that country at, or soon after, the Anglo-Norman invasion. Their name was Latinized "de Rupe Forti," of the strong rock, which is doubtless its true meaning': Patronymica Britannica. This is not satisfactory. The name has sprung from two towns in England, Rochford in Essex, and Rochford in Herefordshire The meaning is the ford on the river Roche, so far as the Essex town is concerned, the Latinization being a mere play on the name.

From Rochfort in the Viscounty of Rouen. Wido de R. held three fees in Bucks from the Earl 1165 (Lib. Niger), and witnessed a charter of Walter Giffard E. of Bucks, t. Henry II. (Mon. ii. 154). Another Guido de R. was summoned for the war in Wales 1257, and in Gascony 1251. Of this family was Milo de Rupeforti, witness to a charter of Henry II. confirming the foundation of Dunbrody Abbey, Ireland 1178 (Mon ii. 1028), from whom descended Maurice de Rochfort 1295, 1302, one of the fideles of Ireland; and the Earls of Belvidere. In Normandy occur Paganus, Guido de Rupefort, 1180-95 (Magni Rotuli Scaccarii Normanniae); Radulfus Rochefort, 1198 (Ib.).
