A diminutive of Robert, which see, and a common surname in Scotland. Jok Robb, voter in Monkland, 1519 (Simon, 45). Nicholas Rob was a witness in Dumfriesshire in 1542 (Anderson), and John Rob appears as citizen and witness in Glasgow in 1551 and 1554 (Protocols, I). Entry money was paid by Jonet Rob for the lands of Cometoun in Stirlingshire in 1563 (ER., XIX, p. 232), and John Rob, vestiarius in Eister Dudingstoun, was retoured heir of John Rob in the West Port of Edinburgh in 1646 (Retours, Edinburgh, 950).
