This name is not recorded in Old English but appears in ME. from French Rolland, Roland, Hrodland or Hruotland, a very common Germanic personal name. About 1180 Alan, son of Roland, appears as witness in a charter of William the Lion to the Abbey o Arnbroath (RAA., I, p. 14), and between 1189—99 Rolland, son of Ucdred, witnessed another charter by the same king (RMP., p. 101). Gilbert fitz Roland and Johan fiz Roland of Ayrshire, and Gilascope fiz Rouland of Perthshire rendered homage in 1296 ( Bain, II, p. 205,209). Thomas Rollan was admitted burgess of Aberdeen, 1440, Alexander Rolande in 1471, and John Rolland in 1514 (NSCM., I, p. 6, 22 45). John Rolland was burgess of Arne, 1475 (Ayr, p. 91), and another Jhone Rolland rented land in Gwuane (Govan) in 1520 (Rental). William Rolland, burg ess of Aberdeen in 1509 appears in the same year as William Rowand (RAA., II, p. 383), and in 1513 as William Rowan (CRA., p. 83). Rollands of Auchmithie, Angus, were an old family, a still older family were the Rollands of Disblair in Aberdeenshire, and a family of Rolland (Rouland in 1545) held land of the commendator of Dunfermline soon after the Reformation (Stodart, II, p. 309). Rowand was the common pronunciation of the name and it has given origin to the surnames Rowan and Rowand, which see. Rollande 1555, Rollane 1522.
