Two forms of the same name, found mainly in Perthshire and Fife. A transformation of the personal name Rudolph. A family named Rollock were long eminent in Dundee. John Rollo, cleric of diocese of Moray and notary public, 1373 (LAC., 101), another John Rollow was burgess of Edinburgh, 1381 (Egidii, p. 22). Duncane Rollo or Rollok, servant of Aleyn of Bollone (Boulogne) of Edinburgh, 1394 (Bain, IV, 460), in 1396 had a safe conduct to purchase goods in England (ibid., 476,477). He is doubtless the Duncan Rollok, juror on an inquest in Edinburgh, 1402, (Egidii, p. 38) and the Duncan Rollo, burgess of Edinburgh, 1413 (RMS., I, 947). William Rollock of Findone gave his bond of manrent "to ryd & gang" with Laurence, Lord Oliphant, 1476 (Macfarlane, II, p. 110). Rook, a not uncommon pronunciation of the name accounts for David Rook in Glasgow, 1552, referred to in the same record as David Rollok (Protocols, I, p. 115,116), and Jacobus Rollok, provost of Dundee, 1485, appears in the following year as Rwok, and in 1490 as Rook (RAA., II. p. 239,246, 264). Robert Rouk resigned the lands of Buteland in the sheriffdom of Edinburgh in the reign of Robert III (RMS., I, App. II. 1791). Agnes Ruke held a tenement in Glasgow, 1428 (LCD., p. 245), and in 1486 James Rouk had a lease of the teinds of Clova (RAA., II, p. 246). George Rollog is recorded in 1526 (ibid., p. 461), and Lamont (Diary, p. 37, 49, 84) referring to the Rev. Alexander Rollock, minister of Perth, spells his name Rogge and Roguel Robert 11 in the eleventh year of his reign confirms a charter of Duncrub and other lands granted to John Rollo by David, earl palatine of Stratheam and earl of Caithness, 1380 (Stodart, II). Rillict 1550, Rolhoc (of Duncrub) 1471, Rolle 1546, Rolloke 1614, Roily 1530, Rolok 1640.
