But v. Romaine, of which it may be but a vulgar corruption. Romans is found in the London Directory side by side with Romaine. Rummen in the first of the following instances seems to be a corrupted form of Romaine:

From the old manor of Rothmaneic in the parish of Newlands, Peeblesshire, now known as Romanno. Philip de Roumanoch witnessed an agreement anent the marches of Kingside, c. 1250 (Neubotle, p. 27). Johne of Roumanno of that Ilk is mentioned in 1484 (Peebles, p. 31). The last of the name in the direct line is said to have been Janet Romanno or Romannois who carried the property into the family of Murray by her marriage (before 1513) with William Murray, son of Murray of Falahill and Philiphaugh (Chambers, Peeblesshire, p. 480). There are not many instances of the name in record. Sir Alexander Romannois. a priest and notary public between 1508-20, Thomas Romannois in 1542 William Romanois in Duncanlaw in 1562, and Marion and Helen Romannois in Linton, 1575 (Ruchan, Peeblesshire, III, p. 11-12). John Romanoss in Haddington consents to the king's coronation, 1567 (RPC., I, p. 558). James Rolmainhous, burgess of Lauder, 1642, signs the register as James Romanis (RRM., I, p. 97), and James Rolmanhous or -house is in Julainslie, 1662 (ibid., II, p. 20). Robert Romaners was cited 'for playing at the bullets on the Sabbath day,' 1649 (MCM. I, p. 438). William Romanis, smith in Kelso, 1826 (Heirs, 708). Sergeant A. L. Romanis of Edinburg] was killed in action, 1941.
