The Romes were a small clan living under the protection of the Johnstones in Gretna, in the sixteenth century, but subsequently increased their fortunes and estates. For a time they possessed the Castle of Dalswinton (Johnstone, Historical families of Dumfriesshire, p. 76). John Rome was retoured heir of John Rome of Dalswyntoune-Rome, his father, in lands in Dumfriesshire in 1638 (Retours, Dumfries, 166). Robertus Roome and Johannes Roome de Dalswinton, 1674 (Inquis., 5701), and George Rome, writer in Dumfries, 1692 (ibid., 7304). The surname still exists in the shires of Dumfries and Kirkcudbright.
