This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Romilly'; probably Romilly, a town in Savoy, near Geneva (Lower). The present Romillys are descendants of a French Protestant who settled in England at the beginning of the last century (v. Memoirs of Sir Samuel Romilly). Romeley existed six hundred years ago, but is evidently of English origin. It either died out or became incorporated with Romeny, now Romney and Rumney.
