Diminutive of Irish ron, Gaelic ron, 'a seal.' S. Ronan was a companion of S. Modan, the patron saint of Rosneath; his church was probably at Sheneccles (Strathcndrick, p. 126-127). Ronan was the name of a monk and abbot of the Culdees of Lochleven, who gave the place of their cell to the bishop of St. Andrews in return for food and clothing, a. 985 (RPSA., p. 113).
