User-submitted Reference
The Rooley surname is derived from some ancient villages. An old turnpike road exists in Bradford, W.Yorkshire called Rooley Lane, which ran through what was the Bowling area. There were 3 ancient villages called Great Rooley, Little Rooley and Hanging Rooley. In 1354 there is recorded a juror in the Manor Court at Bradford 'John de Roulai' and in a will of 1502 there is reference to a tenement called Rowle and there existed 17th century buildings called Rooley Hall. In old English raw means 'row' or 'street' and leah means 'meadow' or 'field'. It is possible that old English ruh, which means 'rough', has relevance as nearby areas have been known as 'roughs' for centuries.
