From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

ROSSEDAL: Of territorial origin probably from Rosedale in the North Riding of Yorkshire (in 1186, Rossedal). Two brot ers of the name, Turgot de Rossedal and Guido de Rossedal, held extensive lands in the lower part of Eskdale in the reign of Malcolm IV. Turgot gave to the Abbey of Jedburgh the religions house of Lidel and the church of Kirkander, and Guido, with the consent of Radulf his son, gave 42 acres between the Esch (Esk) and Lidel where they meet, and the freedom of the water from the Moat of Lidell to the church of Lidell (RMS., I, App. I, 94). Turgot was succeeded by William de Rossedal.
