Rosewell Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'de Rosseville'. Mr. Lower writes,' Said to be a corruption of the French Rosseville. It is therefore local, but I know not the place. Kent, in his Grammar of Heraldry, speaks of the Rev. S. Rosewell, of London, M.A., as descended from the Rosewells of Somersetshire, Wiltshire, and Devon, who came in with the Conqueror': Patronymica Britannica. I do not think there is any ground for this. I believe the West country Rosewells, Ruswells, Rowsells, and Rousellsare all mere variants of Russell (v. Rowsell). I cannot find any early Rossevilles in English registers.

1519. Adam Russell, or Ruswell, or Rossewell: Register of the University of Oxford.

1580. Alex. Ruswell, Somerset: ibid.

1599. John Roswell, Somerset: ibid.

1606-7. Henry Rosewell, Devon: ibid.

Rowsell seems to be the modern Somersetshire form.

A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

Of local origin from the village of Rosewell in the parish of Lasswade, Midlothian. Isobel Rosewell in Edinburgh, 1602 (Edinb. Marr.).

The Surnames of Scotland (1946) by George Fraser Black (1866-1948)

(English) Dweller at the Roe's Spring (spring frequented by the roe) [a genit. of Old English rá, a roe + wiella a spring, wel] There is a Rosewell near Lasswade, co. Edinburgh.

It has been stated that the surname Rosewell is from a French Rosseville: if there is a place with this name in France (I cannot trace it) some Rosewells may quite possibly owe their name to France. On the other hand, as Rosewell is largely a west-country surname, it may possibly also represent a Cornish local name, from Cornish rós, a heath, and either whél, a work or mine, or g)wél, a field.

See Roswel., Roswald.
