Of territorial origin from the lands of Rossie in Fife. The family of Rossy of that Ilk had an early settlement near Montrose as vassals of the Norman de Malherbe. Robertus de Rossyn was present at perambulation of the marches of the lands of the Abbey of Arbroath and the barony of Kynblathmund, 1219 (RAA I, p. 163), and Thomas de Rossi, son of Robert de Rossi, had a charter of the lands of Rossi from Hugo Malherb, c. 1245 (ibid., I, p. 337). Walter de Rossy, burgess of Montrose, rendered homage, 1296 (Bain, II, p. 169,198), and Henry Rossie had a charter of the lands of Inrony or Inyoney in the sheriffdom of Forfar from Robert I (RMS., I, App. II, 461), and Bernard Rossie or Rosse had a charter of the barony of Rossie and the lands of Inene in the same sheriffdom from Robert m (ibid., I, App. II, 1801). Johannes Rossy held land in Aberdeen, 1340 (REA., I, p. 68), John de Rossy witnessed a Brechin document in 1364 (REB., I, p. 20), and David Rossy de eodem was juror on an inquest on the lands of Ouchterlowny in 1457 (RAA., II, p. 96). The name recorded in Edinburgh, 1942.
