Three persons of this name rendered homage in 1296: (1) Anegos de Rothenek of the bounty of Elgin (Bain, II, p. 211), (2) William de Rotheneyk or Rothenayke (or Rothenethe) (ibid., p. 169,195, 209), and (3) Patrick de Rotheney or Rothenayke of the county of Perth. The seal of the last bears a roebuck running, tree in background, S' Fatricii de Rothenai (ibid., p. 169,202, 533). Heugenius de Rothenay, juror on assize on the lands of Ledintoscach and Rotmase, 1333 (REA., I, p. 53). George Rothny or Rothnye was 'reidar in Mar in 1570 (CAB., p. 230), and David Rothnie was tenant of Halsiewells in 1595 (RSCA., I, p. 350). Frank Alexander Rothnie from Garnrie was killed in the first Great War (Turriff).
