Thomas Rouche held a croft in the barony of Lesmahagow, 1348 (SCM., IV, p. 245), and Andrew Ruch was bailie of Linlithgow in 1472 (Sc. Ant., XVII, p. 119). Henry Rouch appears as procurator for the bishop of Brechin, 1519 (REB., II, 174), and John Rough, a Dominican of the monastery of Stirling, was "the first man from whom John Knox received any taste of the truth" Ewstachius Roch or Rowgh, a Fleming, had a tack of the lands of Newhaven and later was proprietor of a land in Leith, 1588 (ERR., 1578-89, p. 534,538). David Rouche had a charter of three sixteenth parts of the vill and lands of Newbirneton, 1601 (RD., p. 497). The surname is now not uncommon in Perthshire. For origin See under Rock.
