This surname comes from the ancient Greek word roussos, which means 'red'. During the Byzantine empire, where hippodrome teams had a great amount of power in the empire, it was a team Reds, or how they called themselves Roussoi (plural of Roussos), until they rebelled to the emperor and a manslaughter occurred the biggest of the empire inside the hippodrome. After that they diminished in numbers. After many years and depression to the Greeks from Ottoman Empire the ones who were characterised by their team became a surname. Some of them changed suffix and we obtained the 3 variants Roussos, Roussis, and Roussakis.
