(1) from Ruadhdn, diminutive of Ruadh, 'red'. (2) From the Scots pronunciation of Rolland, which see. Thomas de Rolland (de most probably an error) was common councillor of Aberdeen, 1439 (Guildry, p. 186). Agnes Rowan was tenant under the bishop of Glasgow, 1511 (Rental), and William Rowan in Aberdeen, 1513 (CRA., p. 83), appears in 1509 as Rolland and Rowand (RAA., II, p. 383). Thomas Rowand was witness in Glasgow, 1550 (Protocols, I). Edward Rowane appears in Stirling, 1525 (SBR., p. 25), the daughter of Nicol Rowan had sasine, 1573 (Pitfirrarte, 181), John Rowane was servitor to Robert Pont of Trinity College, Edinburgh, 1575 (Soltre, p. 137), and James Rowane was burgess freeman of Glasgow, 1595 (Burgesses). John Rowand (alias Long John) was portioner of Meiklegovan, 1692 (Retours, Lanark, 407). The wife of Dr. William Guild (early seventeenth century) was Catharine Rolland or Rowen (SN&Q., II, p. 139), Bethia Rouand was heir of Andrew Rouand, portioner of Meikle Govan, 1697 (Retours, Renfrew, 214), John Rowand is at Broomloan, 1709 (Minnies, p. 54), and Mr. John Rouan was minister at Parton, 1750 (Kirkcudbright). David Rowane, a Frenchman, engineer to the queen, 1557-8 (ER., XIX, p. 6, 38, 85. etc.) probably derived his surname from Rouen.
