A West country surname. Reservation of a liferent was made to Katherine Rowat in Glasgow, 1554 (Protocols, I). John Rowett or Rowatt was member of Scots parliament for Glasgow, 1585 (Hanna, II, p. 511). Adam Rowat, maltman, was burgess freeman of Glasgow, 1606 (Burgesses). Robert Rowat is recorded in the toun of Stanehouse, 1623 (Lanark CR.), payment was made to Mr. Alexander Rowatt in Glasgow, 1631 (RUG., III, p. 571), and Mr. James Rowat, minister at Kilmarnock, complained that he could not get the manse, 1689 (RPC., 3 ser. XIV, p. 389). Dr. Rowett founded the institution in Glasgow bearing his name. Harrison has Rowat, Rowatt, from French Rouat, a double diminutive of Rolf, Rodolf. compare MaCrowat. The 9 shilling lands of Rowatstoune in Ayrshire are mentioned in 1668 (Retours, Aur, 558).
